As part of ongoing efforts to improve the wellbeing of conflict-affected communities, the Youth, Adolescent, Reflection and Action Centre (YARAC) joined consortium partners to train 30 Health and Hygiene Promoters from Riyom Town and Gwon Rim communities in Plateau State.
The two-day training was organised under the Emergency Assistance to Displaced and Affected Populations in Plateau State project, bringing together community volunteers who will play a critical role in promoting healthy practices and improving access to essential hygiene information within their communities.
Implemented through the START Network consortium, the initiative is delivered in partnership with Christian Aid, ActionAid, JDPC Jos, WOCCI Nigeria, and YARAC, with support from the START Fund.
The training equipped participants with practical knowledge and skills to serve as community-based health promoters, focusing on key areas that contribute to healthier and more resilient communities, including:
- Safe Water: Promoting access to clean and safe drinking water to reduce the spread of waterborne diseases.
- Improved Sanitation: Encouraging the use of hygienic sanitation facilities and practices that protect public health.
- Good Hygiene Practices: Raising awareness on proper handwashing, personal hygiene, and disease prevention measures.
- Community Health Promotion: Empowering local volunteers to educate households, support behaviour change, and strengthen community resilience.
By investing in local health and hygiene promoters, the programme strengthens community capacity to respond to public health challenges, particularly in areas affected by conflict and displacement. These trained volunteers will serve as trusted resource persons, helping families adopt practices that reduce health risks while improving overall wellbeing.
This initiative reflects YARAC’s commitment to supporting humanitarian action that not only responds to immediate needs but also builds the knowledge and resilience communities need to recover and thrive.
Through collaboration with government, humanitarian partners, and local communities, YARAC continues to contribute to sustainable solutions that protect lives, restore dignity, and promote healthier futures across Plateau State.
