The Youth, Adolescent, Reflection and Action Centre (YARAC) is advancing its commitment to sustainable livelihoods and peaceful coexistence with the next phase of activities at the Kihang Buhit PEACE FARM in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Following the successful cultivation of Congo grass, Mucuna beans, and organic maize, project beneficiaries are now participating in practical training on forage preservation using Hay and Silage production techniques. The training equips farmers and herders with the knowledge and skills needed to preserve high-quality livestock feed for use during the dry season, ensuring a more reliable source of nutrition for their animals throughout the year.
By introducing these sustainable forage preservation methods, the programme is helping communities improve livestock productivity, reduce seasonal feed shortages, and lessen pressure on natural grazing lands. The initiative also encourages collaborative learning between farmers and herders, creating opportunities to strengthen relationships through shared economic interests.
Through the training, participants will learn how to:
- Preserve surplus forage for future use during periods of scarcity
- Improve livestock nutrition and overall productivity
- Build resilience against the challenges of climate variability and seasonal pasture shortages
- Promote sustainable cooperation between farming and herding communities
The Kihang Buhit PEACE FARM continues to serve as a practical demonstration site where innovative agricultural practices contribute not only to improved livelihoods but also to long-term peacebuilding. By combining sustainable agriculture with community collaboration, the initiative demonstrates how shared knowledge and economic opportunity can foster trust, reduce conflict, and build more resilient communities.
This activity forms part of the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRING) Programme, supported by the UK Government through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The programme is implemented in partnership with Tetra Tech and ActionAid Nigeria, and delivered by YARAC.
