The Kihang Buhit PEACE Farm in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State recently welcomed representatives from the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRING) Programme for a field engagement with farmers and herders participating in YARAC’s peacebuilding and livelihood initiatives.
The visit provided an opportunity to observe firsthand how project beneficiaries are implementing sustainable agricultural practices that strengthen livelihoods while promoting peaceful coexistence between farming and herding communities.
Participants showcased a range of innovations introduced through the programme, including sustainable forage production and preservation using hay and silage techniques, organic manure production, and value addition through dairy processing into cheese and yoghurt. These activities are helping communities make better use of available resources, improve agricultural productivity, and create new income-generating opportunities.
One of the highlights of the visit was the practical demonstration of hay and silage production. By preserving nutritious livestock feed for the dry season, farmers and herders are better equipped to manage seasonal challenges, improve livestock productivity, and reduce pressure on grazing lands. The adoption of these climate-smart practices represents an important step toward building more resilient farming systems.
The delegation also met with the community’s dairy processing group, whose members continue to produce yoghurt and cheese as part of their growing enterprise. Their locally branded PEACE Yoghurt reflects how shared economic activities can strengthen collaboration, increase household incomes, and reinforce trust among previously divided communities.
The visit underscored the value of combining sustainable agriculture, economic empowerment, and community collaboration as practical pathways to lasting peace. As farmers and herders continue to work side by side, the Kihang Buhit PEACE Farm stands as a powerful example of how shared livelihoods can transform relationships and build resilient communities.
