The Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRING) Programme team recently conducted a field verification visit to the Peace Farm in Kihang Buhit Community, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, to assess the progress and impact of project activities implemented by the Youth, Adolescent, Reflection and Action Centre (YARAC).
The verification team, comprising Epraim Emma, Donatus Callistus, and Jamila Abubakar, met with participating farmers and herders to observe how the project is fostering sustainable livelihoods while strengthening peaceful coexistence among communities.
During the visit, the team learned about the adoption of sustainable forage production, organic manure production, and value-added dairy processing, including the production of cheese and yoghurt. These livelihood activities have created new economic opportunities while encouraging collaboration between farming and herding communities.
A key highlight of the visit was an engagement with members of the United Farmers and Herders Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited, located along No. 2 Kihang Road, Jebbu Bassa. Members of the cooperative shared their experiences, lessons learned, and the positive changes they have witnessed since participating in the programme. They also reflected on how the capacity-building support has strengthened cooperation, improved productivity, and enhanced relationships within their communities.
The team also met with women’s groups who have expanded their economic activities through dairy processing. The women proudly showcased their newly branded product, PEACE Yoghurt, demonstrating how the project is empowering women to create sustainable sources of income while contributing to community development.
The visit highlighted the transformative role of shared economic opportunities in promoting dialogue, building trust, and reducing tensions between farmers and herders. By creating platforms for cooperation and joint enterprise, the initiative continues to demonstrate that sustainable livelihoods can serve as a foundation for lasting peace.
