On the 2nd of January 2026, YARAC returned to the Kihang-Buhit forage demonstration farm with a clear purpose: to begin drilling a borehole that would provide sustainable water for both agriculture and daily community life.

The decision to commence drilling followed a geophysical survey conducted on the 17th of December 2025, which identified the optimal location for drilling. From survey to action in just two weeks a pace that reflects YARAC’s commitment to doing more than planning.

The Problem Being Solved

Plateau State has experienced a significant drop in water levels due to low rainfall in recent seasons. For the Kihang-Buhit community, this has created dual pressures: reduced capacity to irrigate the forage demonstration farm, and diminished access to clean drinking water for residents.

These are not separate problems. They are interconnected and so is YARAC’s solution. The borehole addresses both, supporting agricultural productivity while directly improving the health and wellbeing of community members.

Water as a Foundation for Peace

In communities where farmers and herders share land and resources, water scarcity can quickly become a source of tension and conflict. YARAC’s investment in this borehole is simultaneously an investment in climate-smart agriculture, farmer-herder cooperation, and community resilience.

When people have enough water, they spend less time competing for it and more time building together. This intervention, supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) through the SPRING Programme in Nigeria, is a tangible demonstration of what peacebuilding through livelihoods looks like in practice.
